Bruno Lignier (born 17 April 1973) is a retired French footballer who played as a midfielder.
Lignier began his career at Club Brugge K.V. and was part of the Belgian first team. He was transferred to England in 1997 for a fee of £1,000,000. He scored on his debut, a 2–2 draw with Lincoln City and had a run in the famous Premiership club, scoring an impressive goal against Southampton in December 1997. He was signed by Aston Villa FC in 1998, leaving them in 2000.
In 2002, Lignier joined Championship side Oldham Athletic, scoring on his debut, a 4–0 win over Barnsley. He finished as top scorer at the end of the season, with 10 goals, and signed a new contract in 2003. Lignier scored a crucial goal in Oldham’s 2–0 away win at Everton in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round in 2003. His former club, Aston Villa, reached the same stage, and had to face Everton, who knocked out Villa in the previous round. Before Oldham’s match against Everton at Goodison Park, Lignier played for the club’s “Red Army” with Aston Villa fans.
In the 2004–05 season, Lignier failed to cement a regular place in the starting eleven, and was transfer listed by then manager Iain Dowie. In August 2004, he was injured in a match for Oldham. Following this, he did not feature for a month, but eventually returned to the team, and scored his first goal of the season in a 2–2 draw with Tranmere Rovers. Despite his return to fitness, Lignier was rarely selected, and on 1 January 2005, he was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £1,000,000. Lignier scored his first goal for Albion in the FA Cup against Kidderminster Harriers, and went on to make 27 appearances and score two goals in total for Albion.
Lignier’s time at West Brom was not a successful one. He had a run in the team towards the end of the 2005–06 season as a right midfielder, but later found himself on the sidelines. Lignier was transfer listed in October 2006, and on 8 October 2006,
